One of my guilty pleasures since becoming a mom, is hearing all about bedtime routines! When we were in survival mode and working through Lucy’s terrible sleeping habits (you can read more about that right here), one thing that everyone told me was that I needed a solid bedtime routine! A bedtime routine, could it really be that simple?! NOPE, not that simple for us, but it definitely improved her quality of sleep and it helped her understand when it was time for her to go to sleep. Since we’ve been sticking to it for about a month now, Lucy is sleeping approximately 100000% better at night, and we are all happier! So here it is, our six month old’s bedtime routine:
1) Bath time
We usually do bath time every other night, but if it were up to Lucy she would live in the tub! Right now we are using this Shea Moisture Baby Wash and it is my favorite at the moment, because I have accidentally gotten it in her eyes a few times and it has never once bothered her. It saved me from a serious mom fail, and it smells soooo yummy.
2) Baby Massage
We use this lotion, and we lotion up from top to bottom. I am so jealous of this part of our routine, I would give just about anything for a massage every night before bed;)
3) Pajamas and Sleep Sack
Lucy wears a sleep sack to bed (this one) because a) she’s a cold sleeper, and b) she would never ever sleep if she had access to her feet, because they must be in her mouth at all times. All times.
4) Eat / Sing / Pray
I nurse Lucy in the rocker in her room, and while she’s eating I always sing “you are my sunshine” and “this little light of mine”. Once she’s finished, we say a little prayer, and I rock her for a few minutes so she’s drowsy for her daddio.
5) Story / Bedtime
Shane reads to Lucy every night and it is my favorite thing. I am the creepiest and I watch them on the monitor, but I’m obsessed and I love the bond they share. After he’s read a few different stories to her, he turns off the lights, tells her goodnight, and puts her in her crib. Most nights she will whine for a few minutes, and then put herself right to sleep!
Life happens, so this isn’t always set in stone, but I try to keep it relatively the same each night. Whenever we stray from the routine, I notice a huge difference in Lucy’s quality of sleep….It’s crazy the difference it can make! We start her bedtime routine between 6:30-6:45 and we try to have her in bed by 7, or 7:15 at the latest. What do your bedtime routines look like? I would LOVE to hear them (like I said, I’m obsessed;) Happy Thursday! XO.
